A Global Business Update

Global professionals from every corner of the world continue to help Greater Louisville’s businesses run, start new ventures, and grow our population. Here is a brief synopsis of what GLI is working on:

From the Global Louisville Action Plan

GLI is highly engaged in the Global Louisville Action Plan with Louisville Metro Government and we are glad to report that there are new resources to share. We continue to use our jointly-issued report to focus on recommended areas of work to make our community more favorable and attractive to global talent.  The report outlines inclusive and progressive opportunities for residents of all cultural backgrounds.

Key areas of opportunity include:

  • Building more targeted outreach & pipelines for workers into high-need industries such as nursing and manufacturing
  • Identifying & assisting foreign-trained professionals to get necessary credentials to work within their field in the US.
  • Increasing awareness and access to resources to help entrepreneurs to build and grow their businesses.
  • Connecting earlier and more proactively with international students and workers to increase their awareness of opportunities in our region & build stronger connectivity to our region.

The Latest Local Economic Impact Data

Last week, New American Economy, a national organization committed to advancing informed dialog on the issue of immigration reform, released an interactive map and report detailing the economic impact of foreign-born individuals by Congressional District.

The big news from NAE is that the Louisville MSA boasts over 3,600 immigrant entrepreneurs – and across the state, immigrant-owned firms employ over 35,000 workers.

The site also offers a deeper dive into national-level impact reports focused on key economic issues impacted by immigrants, including Entrepreneurship, Agriculture, Innovation, STEM fields, and more. It is a treasure trove of data and we encourage business leaders interested in the global workforce market within the U.S. to compare how Louisville stacks up to our peer cities.

Opportunity to Engage

Next week, GLI will bring back a popular aspect of our early efforts to attract and retain international professionals. GLIP, the Greater Louisville International Professionals, will gather for an evening of networking and connections which will bring to life a taste of the Global Louisville plan in action.  Back by popular demand – After Hours Networking brings together the region’s most diverse & dynamic group of professionals for a premier networking experience. Connect across organizations, industries, and networks to build your career capacity and learn more about our global city! Meet & exchange ideas with other global-minded professionals and learn about our plans & opportunities coming in 2017.

Hear from Cedric Francois, President & CEO of Apellis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. as he shares his story of discovering Louisville, KY and making it home – both for himself and for a thriving, innovative, job-creating company. Also joining us is a representative from IMPRINT -the IMmigrant PRofessional INTegration network.

Foreign-born individuals have become increasingly key to our region’s growth, yet many face challenges to fulfilling their
full professional potential due to unrecognized degrees or credentials. Hear more about how communities across the nation are addressing this challenge as we look to build innovative solutions to reduce ‘brain waste’ here in Greater Louisville.  We encourage all of our investors to be part of defining & building targeted solutions here in Louisville.
