Describe what your organization does in two sentences… Breakout Games is a national escape room brand featuring multiple, hour-long scenarios where visitors must crack codes, discover clues and solve puzzles in order to “escape” along with family, friends and coworkers. Our newest live-action entertainment experience Activate Games fuses technology and
physical activity to offer high-tech games created to test players’ physical and mental agility across a wide variety of real-life challenges.
Who do you serve? Both Activate Games and Breakout Games bring real-life, beat-the-clock adventures and high-tech gaming to Louisville and the surrounding communities. From families and coworkers, to friends, gamers and everyone in between, both experiences cater to a range of people looking to “escape ordinary” and connect with those around them. Breakout Games was founded in 2010 and is currently available in more than 30 cities across the country.
One fact you may not know about my organization is… We own and operate four unique brands in Louisville: Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt, Vinaigrette Salad Kitchen, Breakout Games and Activate Games. While those may seem like businesses without much in common, we apply the same core values to each of them: do good, be better and have fun. The restaurant and entertainment industries go hand-in-hand because they require high customer and employee engagement. We love connecting with people, and at the end of the day, that’s what motivates us.
What sets your business apart from others in the way you attract and retain talent? We want to see our employees flourish in the work that they’re doing. We intentionally lead and manage our team with honesty and kindness. And while some might tend to lean more toward one or the other, our goal is to have a healthy tension between the two. Since we have multiple brands in more than 30 cities across the country, we always strive to come up with new ideas because it creates opportunities for our best employees who want to grow with the company.
How has your business had to adapt during the COVID-19 Pandemic?
When the realities of COVID-19 began affecting our business, our first priority was to focus on our team to ensure they were safe. We had to make hard decisions in the short term in order to have good options in the long term, and that meant saving every
dollar we possibly could. As a whole, we did our best to look at the big picture and find opportunities to be creative. We adapted our escape room model to offer a virtual experience for players, which allowed for innovation and new ideas, and we’ve adjusted
safety protocols at all of our locations in an effort to help flatten the curve and meet people where they are during this time.
What do you like about being an investor in Greater Louisville Inc.? Louisville is such a vibrant city and we love how passionate locals are about their community. There’s a strong focus on hospitality and entertainment, which makes owning and operating four businesses in those industries a lot of fun. The smaller communities within the larger market is what makes Louisville special, and we see our membership in Greater Louisville Inc. as an extension of that.
How does your organization engage in the community? We believe that people thrive when they experience deep, meaningful relationships, and engaging in shared experiences is a key way those are built. Through Breakout Games, Activate Games and beyond, we create opportunities for those experiences to take place with the goal of bringing people together in an unexpected way.
