New legislative working group formed to address Kentucky’s pension crisis

Legislative leadership in the Kentucky General Assembly announced a new working group charged with reviewing and analyzing the state’s multi-billion dollar public pension crisis. According to a press release, the group is expected to make recommendations to the legislature by February 15, though it also has the option of requesting extensions all the way to December 1. One of the co-chairs of the working group is Representative Jerry Miller, a Greater Louisville area legislator from eastern Jefferson County. The full membership of the working group is listed below.

Pension reform remains one of the top priorities for GLI. As our 2019 Legislative Agenda states, “While GLI applauds the legislature for fully funding pensions in the 2018-2020 budget and has been supportive of reform efforts in previous sessions, the problem is not going away. The liabilities are still there; our systems remain highly vulnerable to economic downturns; already-tight local government budgets will only become tighter; and Kentucky’s credit rating continues to be at risk of further downgrades.” GLI encourages the working group to take this issue head-on and find a sustainable solution to Kentucky’s pension crisis.

The group’s first meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in Rm. 154 of the Capitol Annex. Additional information can be found here. Comments on the state’s public pension systems can be sent to PublicPensions@lrc.ky.gov.
