Help shape GLI’s 2019 State Legislative Agenda

The 2019 regular sessions of the Kentucky and Indiana legislatures are rapidly approaching, with both scheduled to convene in early January. GLI is actively laying the groundwork for another successful year in Frankfort and Indianapolis by vetting new policy stances and updating previous positions, all of which will eventually make up the contents of the 2019 State Legislative Agenda. This document, produced annually, articulates the state legislative goals and priorities of the Greater Louisville business community. All GLI investors should be a part of this process. Here’s how to get involved.

At the center of our efforts to prepare for 2019 and craft next year’s State Legislative Agenda is our committee process, which forms the foundation of GLI’s approach to taking stances on key public policy questions facing our community. The process starts with the convening of GLI’s six issue advisory committees:

  • Bi-State Issues
  • Business Competitiveness
  • Education & Workforce Development
  • Environment & Energy
  • Healthcare
  • Transportation & Infrastructure

Currently, more than 300 GLI investors serve on an issue advisory committee, but all GLI investors are eligible for service. Every fall, these committees convene in separate meetings to create first drafts of their respective sections of the State Legislative Agenda. The Healthcare Committee, for example, discusses and proposes language on issues related to things like Medicaid and treatment for substance use disorders. The Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, on the other hand, vets issues like road aid modernization and investment in water and sewer infrastructure. GLI Advocacy staff work closely with the committees and committee chairs to fine-tune the language of each section of the State Legislative Agenda before presenting a full first draft of the whole document to GLI’s Public Policy Committee. Following approval by the Public Policy Council, the draft then goes to the GLI Board of Directors for final approval.

Service on an issue advisory committee is a great way to get involved in GLI’s public policy process and presents unique opportunities for networking, learning about the issues impacting our community, making sure your voice is heard in the halls of government in Frankfort and Indianapolis.

Dates for the fall 2018 meetings of the issue advisory committees have already been announced via email. If you missed an email, want more information, or are interested in joining a committee, reach out to us at govermentaffairs2@greaterlouisville.com.
