Ambassador Message: Willkommen in Louisville. Welcome to Louisville. Louisville is a great city to work, live, and raise a family. If you already lived in Louisville for a while, then this is nothing new to you. However, if you recently relocated to Louisville, directly from Germany or any other country, you may not understand why people say that Louisville is such a great city. Have you encountered any of these or any other issues lately: “I don’t know anyone. Everything is so different. Where do I find this? Why do I need that? Why don’t they do it this way? I don’t understand. …”. It can be frustrating; adjusting to a new environment takes time, especially if you are moving to another country with its own culture. Here is where the sizable German community in Louisville can be very helpful. G.L.I.P. and this Germany page can be a great tool to create business connections and find new friends; and find answers to the many questions every newcomer will be faced with. Don’t hesitate to ask. After a while, you too will say: “Louisville is a great city”.

My Louisville

As communicated a couple of weeks ago, a number of events will be held next week in support of the first-ever British Pop-Up Consulate in Louisville. GLIP and other organizations and businesses are helping the British Consulate in Chicago to launch and promote this pilot project. Two of the many individual events are focused on soccer. Anyone surprised? After all, soccer is the most popular sport in the UK (and all of Europe). 1. Please join British Deputy Consul General Ramin Navai and a huge crowd of British and German expats to watch the UEFA Champions League Game between London Arsenal and Bayern Munich on March 13 at 2:00 pm at the “Troll Pub Under the Bridge”, next to the 2nd Street Bridge (www.trollpub.com). The official kick-off of the game is at 2:35 pm. Come early for the best seats. Though a formal RSVP for watching the game at the Troll Under the Bridge is not required, the British consulate in Chicago would like to gain an idea of how many people to expect. If you plan to come, please send a brief email with the number of attendees to Alison.Cline@fco.gov.uk 2. If watching this high-level game on TV is not enough for you, then please join Deputy Consul General Ramin Navai and many other soccer fans later on Wednesday, March 13 for a five-a-side soccer fest with 4 teams from Germany, UK, Italy, and USA at Seneca Park. Kick-off is at 7:00 pm, followed by refreshments and prizes at the BBC. The idea is to play a very friendly game. While I have no formal feedback about the other teams, the German team is complete with 5 players. However, if you are interested, we would like to have a couple of additional players as a reserve. Both events should be a lot of fun and very entertaining for anyone with any interest in soccer. So please come out and join us for these unique happenings.

In the week of March 11 –15, 2013 the British Consulate, based in Chicago, will open a temporary "satellite office" in Louisville to bring the consulate to people who may not be able to travel to Chicago. Another big idea behind this is to promote Britain and its culture during that week. If this satellite office will be successful, it will then be replicated in 13 other states on a rotating basis. To support the success of this pilot program there are many exciting activities being planned, two of them provide an excellent opportunity for the German community to also participate and get involved in this great project. The following events are planned, both on the subject of soccer: 1. UEFA Champions League Game On Wednesday March 13, 2013 at 2:45 pm, there will be a UEFA Champions League Game: Arsenal versus Bayern Munich. The game will be held in the Allianz Arena in Munich and is already sold out. We would like to assemble a big group of both British and German expats to watch this exciting game together. The more the merrier. The venue will most likely be the "Troll Pub Under the Bridge", next to the 2nd Street Bridge (http://www.trollpub.com/). 2. Soccer match If there is enough interest locally, we would like to hold a “five a side” soccer game (not 11 players, as standard) with 4 teams from Germany, UK, Italy, and USA. The match is tentatively planned for the same day, Wednesday, March 13, at Seneca Park. Start time to be determined. Of course, the games will only happen, if we find enough players. Please help us spread the word. If you are interested in one or both events, please contact either Manfred Schmidt manfred.schmidt@insightbb.com or Anne Marsand anne.marsand@gmail.com In der Woche vom 11.-15.

Christmas Markets have a very long tradition in Germany, some of them dating back for over 750 years. These colorful events are held in many towns and cities for the four-week Advent season leading up to Christmas Eve. The atmosphere at Christmas Markets like in Nürnberg, Frankfurt, Lübeck, Erfurt, Ulm, Rotenburg a. d. Fulda, and even Berlin is unique and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. But if a trip to Germany during the Advent season is out of reach, don’t despair. Some cities in the US are holding their own versions of the traditional German Christmas Market, each with its own unique flair. The following link to the website of the German Missions provides some choices for a potential weekend trip to Christmas Markets in US cities.
