What is The Greater Louisville Interns program?
An internship is a time of hands-on training for a college student and can be offered by any organization, with special focus
on that organization’s needs and resources. The Greater Louisville Interns program, part of the Graduate!Greater Louisville
endeavor, is designed to encourage students who will be graduating in the near future to remain in the region and forge
relationships with local employers. The students can help to breathe new life into the current economy and will create a
vibrant future for the community. One way to develop this retention is to create lasting relationships between the student and
the employer. With an increased relationship between these two parties, it will be easier to retain students upon completion of
their college studies.
Who can benefit from the Internship program?
The most important thing to remember is that an internship is a way to develop the workforce of the future. By creating an
internship program within your organization, you will have the initial entry to those who will be graduating from college and
ready to enter the full-time workforce. As a prospective intern you can sign up on the GraduateGreaterLouisville.com/interns
Web site and you can be accessed by companies needing your new skills for their current needs. Internships are positive for
all involved and can create lasting relationships for the future.
Objectives of an Internship program:
Through the implementation of GLI and HIRE, a higher education forum, Greater Louisville Interns has been created to retain
the students we educate locally through a series of channels:
- Developing GraduateGreaterLouisville.com/interns in order to match students with employers to create the most
prosperous internship opportunities.
- Offering career development workshops for students in order to allow them the best possible benefit from their internship.
- Hosting workshops for employers in an effort to relay the importance of the internship in the workplace.
- Designing a mentor program to allow each intern to connect with an executive in their chosen career path.
Goals of the Internship program:
Each company’s internal internship program will have different goals and expectations. The overall goal is to match local
college students with over 200 internship opportunities in our community. Here is a list of what should be accomplished by
students and employers:
Employers
- Forge a relationship with students who are interested in your industry or, more specifically, your organization.
- Utilize an untapped resource to solve workforce needs within your organization.
- Evaluate future employees of your organization, risk free.
Students
- Obtain practical work experience using the essential skills learned in your college career.
- Increase your “real-world” understanding of life in a full-time position with a local company.
- Cultivate relationships with role models in the business world.
