Bernheim's Sunset Amphitheatre and Lake Nevin
HWY 245
Clermont, KY

CONNECT at Bernheim Returns September 11

CONNECT at Bernheim is a nighttime collision of art, music, science and technology around Lake Nevin. Artists, scientists, naturalists, progressive thinkers and innocent bystanders unite in this celebration of creativity and technology - informed, infused and surrounded by nature. CONNECT is Bernheim’s grand invitation for all to experiment, play, dance and dream. One can participate in the madness or simply enjoy the sights and sounds.

Saturday, September 11
5:52pm – 9:92pm (Two hours before and after sunset)
Enter at the Sunset Amphitheatre on Lake Nevin

CONNECT at Bernheim provides new perspectives on art, science, beauty and the world around us. At the first event last year, over 5,000 people came to see what CONNECT was all about (we weren’t entirely sure ourselves!). Here’s a taste of what happened at this “happening”:
• Ephemeral, fiery sculptures on the lake
• A large-scale candle labyrinth, for viewing and traversing
• An exploration of the transformative properties of matter
• Video and light projections on water, trees and screens, including a human interpretation of insect rituals
• Magical faerie dances and stories
• Experimental music on the Sunset Amphitheatre stage and around the lake
• A closer look at Jupiter, Saturn and the Milky Way
• Impromptu, participatory art projects
• Frog songs
• Winking stars
• A chance to think differently about the world and each other
CONNECT at Bernheim will be even bigger and better in 2010. BE THERE. Bring a friend or three. Better yet, be a part of CONNECT at Bernheim. Requests to participate are being accepted through Monday, September 7. The form is available at www.bernheim.org/connect.html.

There is a suggested donation fee of $5 per person (funds provide support for Bernheim). Enjoy beer from BBC, food from Jarfi’s Bistro (including sushi and vegetarian selections) and eclectic music on the Sunset Amphitheatre stage as you make your discoveries and share an unforgettable evening with friends.

Bernheim is only 20 minutes from the Louisville airport at exit 112 on I-65. Turn east on HWY 245 and the entrance is one mile on the right.

You can help spread the word. Take CONNECT at Bernheim with you wherever you go – look on Bernheim’s website for an ecard, and check facebook.com/bernheimforest for sharing the information on your social media pages – thanks.

CONNECT at Bernheim is sponsored by Wilson and Muir Bank. Other supporters include these friends of Bernheim: Bluegrass Brewing Company, Great American Insurance Group, Heine Brothers Coffee, LEO Magazine, Salt River Electric and WFPK Radio Louisville.

UK Lecture Series: Japanese Artists in 1920s Paris

October 14, 6p

Crane House, The Asia Institute, Inc.
1244 S.Third Street 40203
Louisville, KY

Admission is free
Douglas Slaymaker, Director of Japanese Studies Program at the University of Kentucky will present a fascinating look at the influence of the “lost generation” and the central role that Paris occupied in the Japanese imagination. Japanese artists travelled to Paris in the 1920s for the same reasons as others: it was the most exciting city in the world, it was a refuge from a constricting society at home, and it was the city for art. Slaymaker will look to the imagery produced by painter Fujita Tsuguharu (1886-1968) and that of poet and painter Kaneko Mitsuharu (1895-1975) to think about the Parisian experience of Japanese in the interwar years. What does it mean to be Japanese; what does it mean to be Japanese in Paris? are among the questions to be considered. This program will be presented at Crane House. Cosponsored by the University of Kentucky Alumni Association.

Louisville, KY

Enjoy the heat and beauty of glowing hot iron. The new tours of Kaviar Forge & Gallery will take you on an unforgettable journey though the history of metalworking. Kaviar Forge & Gallery offers general tours to the public on Fridays at 2 PM with an admission fee of $10 per person. The tour starts in the media room attached to Kaviar Forge with a verbal presentation giving an introduction into the history of blacksmithing followed by a DVD documenting renowned master blacksmith Craig Kaviar and his work. Afterwards we invite guests to join us in the forge to witness red hot iron at 3000 degrees turn soft as wet clay while magically fashioned into art. Though blacksmithing historically uses coal for fuel, our proudest innovation is having turned our main forge more eco-friendly to run a staple to the Clifton neighborhood in Louisville

715 West Main Street
Louisville, KY

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft will host “Equine Divine” from August 7 through October 16, 2010. Fitting for an organization in the heart of the horse industry, this exhibition will feature work by two artists, Deborah Butterfield and Tim Flach, who are inspired by our equine companions. There will also be a small selection of equine inspired prints and drawings from the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine and The Purdue University Galleries. The opening reception will be held in conjunction with the First Friday Trolley Hop on Friday, August 6th from 5:00pm – 9:00pm.

The center piece of the exhibition will be a foal-sized sculpture titled “Dark Matter” by American sculptor Deborah Butterfield, who is perhaps the best know contemporary equine sculptor. Butterfield creates life-size equine sculptures from driftwood and then has the pieces cast in bronze. Born the same day as the 75th running of the Kentucky Derby, Butterfield partly credits that birth date as an inspiration for her subject matter

English photographer Tim Flach, who was featured in a documentary on Animal Planet, has traveled the world photographing horses from the race tracks of England, to the stables in Dubai, to the wild landscapes of Scandinavia and the ranches of the American South West.

This exhibition is being held in celebration of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, which will be held in Lexington, KY from September 25 – October 10, 2010. For more information, visit www.alltechfeigames.com.

Red River

July 24 through October 9, 2010

Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft
715 West Main Street
Louisville, KY

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft is pleased to host “Red River: The Narrative Carvings of Edgar Tolson, Donny Tolson, Carl McKenzie and Earnest Patton.” This is exhibition No. 9 in the Mary Norton Shands Kentucky Artist Series, an ongoing series of exhibitions which focus on the rich variety and quality of Kentucky art and artists, presented in the memory of our Museum founder. The opening reception will be held Friday, July 23rd from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.

Guest-curated by Larry Hackley, the exhibition will feature at least 10 major works by each of the four artists, for a total of 46 works in all. The focus is on their narrative work, so most of the carvings are complex, multi-figure scenes, including six Garden of Eden pieces by Edgar Tolson. Mr. Hackley’s long-time association with all four artists, dating back to the mid-1970s, made him the ideal choice as curator for the exhibition. An extensive, full color catalog including essays by Larry Hackley and Adrian Swain is available for purchase.

This traveling exhibition was organized by The Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University, and was funded in part by a Folklife Program grant from The Kentucky Arts Council.

This exhibition is generously sponsored by Brown-Forman and the Arthur K. Smith Family Foundation.

September 2,3,4,10
Shows 8 PM, doors at 7:00 PM

The Alley Theater
1205 E. Washington St.
Louisville, KY

A play like none other! Critics and audiences around the nation agree, Point Break LIVE! is the best stage adaptation of an action movie in the history of the world.

Called Hilarious by VARIETY and Uproarious by the LA TIMES, Point Break Live! tells the story of former College-football-star-turned-FBI-agent, Johnny Utah, in pursuit of the surfing, bank robbing, skydiving bare-hand-fighting adrenaline-junkie-Zen-master Bodhi Sattva.

Okay as if that weren’t awesome enough, check this out: In Point Break LIVE! the lead role of Johnny Utah is played by an audience member. Yes, anyone can volunteer and step up to the challenge of a grueling (meaning fairly ridiculous) audition process . Using the latest in Applause-o-Meter technology, the winner is chosen by the audience and goes on to star as action hero Johnny Utah for the night, reading all the lines off of cue cards. This method really catches the essential rawness of Keanu Reeves acting style.

Prizewinning journalist Maryjean Wall will discuss her new book on the post-Civil War world of Thoroughbred racing, How Kentucky Became Southern: A Tale of Outlaws, Horse Thieves, Gamblers, and Breeders. She demonstrates how Kentucky came close to slipping from its dominant position in the horse-racing industry, and how it recovered to become the center of horse racing and breeding. Wall served as the turf writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader for thirty-five years. This lecture will begin at 12 p.m. at The Filson Historical Society.
