1718 Frankfort Ave
Louisville, KY
Enjoy the heat and beauty of glowing hot iron. The new tours of Kaviar Forge & Gallery will take you on an unforgettable journey though the history of metalworking. You will experience the past, present, and future of blacksmithing from the discovery of copper and the Bronze Age, to the Iron Age including the post industrialization of ironwork into its present art form. Kaviar Forge & Gallery offers general tours to the public on Fridays at 2 PM with an admission fee of $10 per person. The tour starts in the media room attached to Kaviar Forge with a verbal presentation giving an introduction into the history of blacksmithing followed by a DVD documenting renowned master blacksmith Craig Kaviar and his work. Afterwards we invite guests to join us in the forge to witness red hot iron at 3000 degrees turn soft as wet clay while magically fashioned into art. Though blacksmithing historically uses coal for fuel, our proudest innovation is having turned our main forge more eco-friendly to run a staple to the Clifton neighborhood in Louisville

From Hip-Hop music to contemporary literature, movies to cable television, the identity of Black America is often characterized by caricature and exaggeration. Searching for the Heart of Black Identity showcases the work of an amazing group of African-American artists from across America whose work explores this cultural conundrum. This provocative exhibition includes works in film, photography, textiles, sculpture, paintings and poetry. Each participating artist embarks on their own quest to engage the world through the prism of his or her own personal family, social history and experience. The resulting work is a snapshot of what it means to be African American in contemporary society.

The Most Famous People in the World: Karsh 100
March 12 to June 27, 2010
The Speed Art Museum
2035 S. Third St.
Louisville, KY
Yousuf Karsh, the man behind the lens of some of the 20th-century’s most famous photographic portraits, is known internationally for his ability to capture the true humanity of an individual in his work. Appropriately titled, The Most Famous People in the World: Karsh 100 was organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Karsh’s birth. Included in it are many of the best known portraits of the era’s most illustrious faces displayed alongside rarely seen earlier photographs that reveal how Karsh learned his craft. Represented are luminaries in the fields of art, music, science, theater, politics, and film, including Ernest Hemingway, Audrey Hepburn, Pablo Picasso, Mother Teresa, Jacqueline Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth II, Andy Warhol, and many others. This exhibition represents a visual biography of the photographer, who died in 2002. Admission is free for museum members, $10 for non-members
