Frazier History Museum
“Civil War: My Brother, My Enemy” Exhibit
October 15, 2011 through April 8, 2012 Museum Hours Monday throught Saturday 9-5 Sunday Noon -5
Frazier History Museum
829 West Main Street
Louisville, KY
The War Between the States pitted brother against brother. Nowhere was this division more apparent than in the border state of Kentucky— where family lines were often the battle lines. The Frazier History Museum opens its newest exhibition, “Civil War: My Brother, My Enemy” on October 15, in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. “My Brother, My Enemy,” which runs through April 8, 2012, examines how Kentucky’s distinctive physical and political positioning led to deep and lasting divisions among families and friends. Unlike many other Civil War studies that tend to focus on the battlefield chronology, the 3,800 square foot exhibition delves into the heart-wrenching and personal stories of the nationwide conflict that forever severed once close-knit relationships here in Kentucky. “The war was rough on Kentucky,” explains the exhibit’s curator Kelly Wilkerson. “People literally woke up one morning and were living in enemy territory– Kentucky was treated like a traitor by both sides. No one could be trusted.” “My Brother, My Enemy” is an original exhibit produced by the Frazier Museum and features over 100 artifacts, most of which have never before seen by the public. Historical items include a casket wagon once used by Cave Hill Cemetery to reinter soldiers, an exceptionally rare enlisted soldier’s uniform, slave documents and plantation horns, as well as a number of dresses, flags, surgical tools, horse tack, letters, photos and other personal objects, including the historically significant Mary Todd Lincoln collection. The Mary Todd Lincoln collection includes a baby garment sewn by Lincoln for her son, Robert, as well as commitment papers from the Illinois institution where the widow of America’s 16th president was involuntarily committed. Framed in the greater context of Lincoln’s life, these historic papers provide a chilling insight not only into one of the lowest points of the First Lady’s life, but into the lives of all women at the time. “My Brother, My Enemy” is made possible thanks to a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. “With federal support, tens of thousands of Louisvillians will now be able to access this in-depth history of our state,” said Congressman John Yarmuth. The museum also received sponsorship support from Bosse Mattingly. Because over 20,000 school children visit the Frazier each year through school and family programming, “My Brother, My Enemy” was designed with students in mind. The exhibit includes a number of interactive features, including elements created to work with smart phones, iPad stations that allow visitors to engage with the exhibit via custom apps and other hands-on activities.

Speed Art Museum
Kentucky Antiques from the Noe Collection
August 20, 2011 - February 5, 2012
Speed Art Museum
2035 S. Third St.
Louisville, KY
For almost thirty years, Bob and Norma Noe of Lancaster, Kentucky, hunted down great Kentucky art and antiques. Their devotion to acquiring, preserving, and documenting the commonwealth’s artistic heritage produced one of the state’s finest collections of early Kentucky furniture, paintings, ceramics, textiles, and silver. The exhibition, Kentucky Antiques from the Noe Collection: A Gift to the Commonwealth, features over sixty pieces from the Noes’ collection. Organized geographically, the objects illustrate the great diversity of artists and artisans that influenced the lives of Kentuckians from 1800 to 1900. Paintings and works on paper depict many individuals who shaped the state’s history, such as Daniel Boone, Thomas Jefferson, and Henry Clay. Pieces from the Noes’ extraordinary collection of early Kentucky furniture range from richly inlaid sugar chests, corner cupboards, and bureaus to simple Windsor chairs. Stoneware, silver, and samplers—made everywhere from Maysville to Louisville—round out the exhibition.

Crescent Hill: Its History and Resurgence
Tuesday, February 21 - 6:00 p.m.
The Filson Historical Society
1310 S. Third Street
Louisville, KY
Sam and Debbie Thomas will present a slide program highlighting Crescent Hill: Its History and Resurgence, the companion to his popular book, Crescent Hill Revisited. The basis of their narrative remains the oral histories of those who grew up in Crescent Hill and were young when the neighborhood was just emerging. Their voices are now almost all silent, but their stories still resonate. Maps, newspaper accounts, diaries, and photographs enhance this well researched and documented study in new urbanism as it was occurring. This event is co-sponsored by The Filson Historical Society and the Louisville Historic League. Samuel W. Thomas is the author of several books including The Architectural History of Louisville 1778-1900. He was involved with many local building restorations and is a founder of Preservation Alliance. His wife, editor Deborah McGuffey Thomas, is a former director of the Kentucky Oral History Commission and associate director of the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color
February 3 to May 6, 2012
Speed Art Museum
2035 S. Third St.
Louisville, KY
Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color presents an extraordinary exhibition of modern French masters featuring 55 paintings from the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN and nearly 30 works from Speed’s collection and public and private collections throughout Kentucky. This major exhibition features French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, as well as key artists who came immediately before and after them. Among the who’s who of painters included in the exhibition are Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Braque, and Marc Chagall. Renoir to Chagall demonstrates how Paris as the art capital of the Western world, produced and attracted artists of great accomplishment. On view will be portraits, scenes of daily life, still lifes, landscapes, interiors, and the fascinating worlds of the ballet, cafés, boulevards, and other aspects of modern city life that made Paris a magnet for artists. The diverse subjects and styles of the magnificent works in this exhibition will illustrate the critical developments in French painting during this period that profoundly changed the direction of modern art. While the Impressionists experimented with color and light effects to capture the fleeting sensations of reality, the Post- Impressionists loosened ties to realism altogether by emphasizing abstract elements of form and color, and occasionally the inner world of feelings and emotions. Admission to Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color is $5 for members, $15 for non-members. Children under 18 are admitted free to the exhibition with the purchase of an adult exhibition ticket. Ticket includes admission to museum’s permanent collection and Art Sparks, interactive gallery. Group packages are available by calling 502.634.2960. The Speed is offering a variety of family and adult programs to help visitors better engage with Renoir to Chagall including tours, films, hands-on workshops and more. A complete listing of programs can be found here. Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color has been organized by the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis, in association with The Speed Art Museum.
