Set in the Reagan era this story centers around loneliness and family, cowardice, and guilt. It is about living with-and dying from-AIDS. Not just from HIV, but also from the ripples of heartbreak. Frazier International History Museum

October 16, 2008 at Noon

Sue Mundy was a product of the civil and uncivil unrest existing in Kentucky in the closing days of the Civil War. As Kentuckians bridled under military rule, and the depredations of guerrillas who created an atmosphere that must have resembled, in many ways, the turmoil of present-day Baghdad in its most turbulent months, it was a period of vicious personal wars among a divided populace. Richard Taylor, profesor at Kentucky State University, is a writer and former Louisvillian and Kentucky Poet Laureate. University Press of Kentucky published his historical novel, Sue Mundy: A Novel of the Civil War, as part of its Kentucky Voices Series This "Bite" of History Series presentation is Free to attend.

On November 1, KMAC will be having its 3rd Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Festival. Day of the Dead is a joyous holiday that originated in Mexico. This celebration honors the lives of deceased loved ones and the continuation of life. In this tradition, death is not seen as the end, but rather a new stage of life. This year KMAC’s celebration will include a traditional public altar to honor loved ones, a workshop, as well as a fun festival which will have food, music, art, a sugar skull contest, fire dancers, face painting and puppets. We will then conclude with the traditional Mexican candlelit march. Be sure to join us for what will be a fun night of Hispanic culture.

Kentucky Collectors Series 2: Shelly Zegart
September 5 – October 26, 2008
Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft
715 West Main St.

Shelly Zegart's love of American quilts began in the mid-1970s when she was looking for quilts to use as art in her new home. Since then, she has been a passionate collector, curator, author and lecturer on both antique and contemporary quilts. She has helped to build quilt collections in Kentucky and around the world. This exhibition features about 2 dozen quilts from her personal collection that are of particular significance to her because of their relationships to family, particular artists, specific exhibitions and significant local collections. The exhibition also highlights her contributions in the wider quilt world. Among her most significant contributions came in 1993 when she was a founder of The Alliance for American Quilts.

Marvin Finn: A Retrospective
October 25, 2008 – January 31, 2009
Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft
715 West Main St.
Louisville, KY
Marvin Finn didn’t have much as a child growing up in Clio, Alabama. Born in 1913, the son of a sharecropper, he had to leave school in the first grade to go to work in the fields. His father often whittled on wood and from an early age he would stand alongside him to learn carving skills from him. He also liked drawing, painting and building. As Marvin Finn recalls those hard times, he remembers his most valuable possession, “I had my imagination.” Marvin Finn is best known for his haughty, fun and imaginative roosters. The systematic use of bold stripes, dots and dashes painted on scrap wood against a solid background in unconventional color combinations is his signature style. Some scholars have linked his worked to the West African art of the Yoruba tradition. Marvin Finn says, “I just do what my mind tells me to do. Maybe the good Lord plants these things in my mind. When I leave here and meet the good Lord, I ain’t never going to quit making toys.”

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya - from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Acclaimed for "a veritable fireworks display of outstanding musical ability combined with superb showmanship" (Doors Concerts, Inc.) in addition to blazing precision {and} amazing technique" (The Watertown Daily Times), the Synergy Brass Quintet has emerged as one of the world's most exciting ensembles. Synergy Brass Quintet performs more than anyone in classical music today, delivering "unadulterated exuberance, and a rock star approach to performing," (U.S. 1). Their engagements have taken them all over the United States and around the world, including numerous performances on National Public Radio, and a 2005 appearance on NBC with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The Dan Tyminski Band
Saturday, October 25, 2008 8:00 p.m.
Stem Concert Hall, The Ogle Center
4201 Grant Line Road
New Albany, IN
Since 1994 Dan Tyminski's prowess on guitar and mandolin and his burnished, soulful tenor singing have been key components of Alison Krauss and Union Station. It was his voice you heard when George Clooney sang in the hit film "O Brother Where Art Thou." Prior to his tenure with Alison Krauss, he rose to national prominence as a member of bluegrass favorite, the Lonesome River Band. With Union Station on hiatus for most of 2008, Tyminski brings the latest incarnation of the Dan Tyminski Band to the Ogle Center, including longtime Union Station associate Barry Bales (bass), former Union Station and Mountain Heart band member Adam Steffey (mandolin), sideman extraordinaire Ron Stewart (banjo, fiddle), and newcomer Justin Moses (fiddle, dobro). Tickets available from TicketMaster (502)361-3100
