Wild Card: The Art of Michael Combs, A Fifteen-Yea

March 30 - September 30

21c Museum Hotel, Lobby Gallery
700 West Main Street
Louisville, KY

Growing up on Long Island's East End, Michael Combs was raised by generations of hunters, fishermen, boat builders, and decoy makers. Instead of becoming an avid hunter himself, however, the artist responded to this upbringing by developing a passion for preserving nature and exposing the vanity of gaming sports. Wild Card charts Michael Combs's multi-media, fifteen-year exploration of gender identity and cultural mythology, as experienced and expressed in both personal rites of passage and within the history of group behavior - in the real and imagined games we play.

“Architecture in Landscape"

April 24 through June 29, 2013

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 11 - 4; Sat., 11 -2; or by appointment.

Jane Morgan Gallery
4838 Brownsboro Center
Louisville, KY

We paint en plein air every Thursday starting the first Thursday after Derby through October.

We have been having themes each year, and last year was Architecture in Landscape. We painted in Bardstown, KY, Anchorage, KY, downtown streets of Louisville, the Peterson-Dumnesil House off Frankfort Ave., Locust Grove, Crescent Hill street scenes, churches, old Louisville, and in Frankfort, KY we painted in the old town and also around the newer capitol, in Midway, KY and more.

This was a challenge for all of us, but when you come to see the exhibit you will see that we met the challenge head on! This was a great lesson as we learned so much about architecture and enjoyed the time spent with each other!

Kaviar Forge & Gallery

Artists in Our Midst

The exhibition runs from April 26 through
July 27 with receptions on April 26, May
31, June 28 and July 26 coinciding with
the FAT Friday Trolley Hops 6-9pm.

Kaviar Forge & Gallery
1718 Frankfort Ave
Louisville, KY

Sunlight illuminates a row of brilliant
orange maples above Lexington Road in
Lynn Dunbar’s oil painting. Tiny crayon
dinosaurs dance across porcelain slabs in
one multi-media piece by Katie Melechin.
Culled from the (extremely) local artists
of Jefferson and contiguous counties, the
upcoming group show “Artists in our
Midst” at the Kaviar Forge & Gallery will
question the ongoing prejudice against
local art. In a city like Louisville, there is
no want for talented and ambitious
artists. In fact, we are always surrounded
by artists, and it is their work to reveal
the mysterious in the banal of daily life. A
visitor to the “Artists in Our Midst”
exhibition may be caught squinting at
several paintings on display, trying to
understand his familiarity with the scenes
depicted. The culture of the world at
hand is portrayed, from the vivid colors of
flowers for sale at Bardstown Market, to
the zombie walk that occasionally
catches tourists by surprise, to the
wildlife of Louisville. The artists have
reinvigorated what was familiar and made
it strange. It is a reminder that all artists
are local to someplace.
The exhibition opens April 26, with an
artist reception during the F.A.T. Friday
Trolley Hop from 6-9pm. Over thirty
artists have work appearing in the
exhibition, which was open to all media
and genres. Featuring the work of
Louisville favorites Steve Eilers, whose
playful painting “Sunday with Seurat”
reimagines the famous pointillist beach
scene, and Lindsay Frost, whose
woodwork surpasses craft and reaches an
almost spiritual level of unity with nature,
the exhibition also includes manylesser-
known artists. Delbert Deatrick is an 83
year old who paints daily and has never
displayed his work previously. Joanne
Weiss uses embroidered silk and bamboo
screens to create lush tapestries, while
Jada Lynn uses digital photography to
create the startling effect of her piece,
entitled, “Bacon Wall.” (For a complete
list of the artists, visit craigkaviar.com).
The wild range in media and technique
only prove the rich texture of the local
arts scene.

1701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.
Louisville, KY

Selected Works of G.C. Coxe (Gloucester Caliman Coxe, 1907-1999) April 9 - August 9, 2013 Gloucester Caliman Coxe, known as G.C., lived in Louisville most of his life. He was the first African American to receive an Allen R. Hite Art Scholarship from the University of Louisville and the first black fine arts graduate. He was considered the "dean" of Louisville's African American artists and a mentor to young African American artists. Coxe is described as a daring experimental abstract painter. His paintings suggest the pulsating rhythms and mystery of life, while his use of non-traditional materials displayed the extraordinary in the ordinary and the spiritual in the mundane. This small exhibit includes many of the phases of Coxe's development as an artist, spanning from the 1950s into the 1990s and is curated by Dr. Robert Douglas, a mentee and close personal friend. Exhibit hours: Tuesday-Friday 10am-12 noon and 2-5 p.m. Free and open to the public Appointments available for groups

The Paul Paletti Gallery

The Third Perspective: A Collector's View

Feb. 26 - Aug. 30, 2013

Paul Paletti Gallery
713 East Market Street
Louisville, KY

Over several decades, Paul Paletti has amassed an important collection of historic and contemporary photographic artworks of museum quality. As a collector, his intent has been to choose only those pieces in which the artist demonstrates a superlative degree of technical virtuosity offered with a distinctive vision. “‘The Third Perspective’ is about the relationship I believe is created when a photographer shows a print he or she has made. Until then, the only perspectives that exist happen in front of, and behind the lens — between artist and subject,” says Paletti. “I made one of my first purchases from the remarkable Imogene Cunningham when I was a graduate student in photography. I never really looked back, but I got very serious about collecting about 20 years ago. The gallery is the culmination of that experience. And it just continues to grow because I am a truly passionate about photography, and a collector at heart.” Beginning on Feb. 26, and continuing through August

Dead Man's Call Phone by Sarah Ruhl

June 21, 22, 24, 28, 29 at 8pm

Baron's Theater
131 W Main St
Louisville, KY

Dead Man's Cell Phone
by Sarah Ruhl
directed by Gil Reyes

Despite dying an ordinary death in an ordinary café, Gordon Gottlieb was no ordinary man. Of course, we might never have known if Jean had not answered (and kept) the dead man’s ringing phone.

Now, in a surreal journey through the absurd side of grief, Jean is
determined to make Gordon the man she believes he always should have been. She soon learns that righting Gordon’s wrongs, comforting his family, and answering his calls may turn out to be more soup than she can slurp. Jean has two things going for her – a good heart and a dead man’s cell phone - both are about to get her into a lot of trouble.

Playfully asking, “Where do we go when someone else dies,” the metaphysical pairing of Gordon and Jean leads to laughs and questions our ability to truly connect.
