Fontaine Ferry

May 16-September 8
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily

Frazier International History Museum
829 West Main Street
Louisville, KY

From 1905 to 1969, Fontaine Ferry Park represented the very best of times for hundreds of thousands who enjoyed innocent hours of entertainment in the West Louisville amusement park on the banks of the Ohio River. For others, it was a sign of the times – a place they weren’t allowed access because of the color of their skin.

Fontaine Ferry, a 3,800 square foot exhibition at the Frazier International History Museum that explores this integral part of Louisville's history, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the park's closing.

The exhibition will explore the park's beginnings as a boat landing in 1814, through the Great Depression and the Great Flood of 1937 to the 64-acre attraction's demise amid the effects of urban flight and racial tensions of the civil rights movement. Swords of the Americas & The Art of the Duel

March 7 - August 9

Frazier International History Museum
829 West Main Street
Louisville, KY

The Frazier International History Museum opens two new temporary exhibitions, Swords of the Americas and The Art of the Duel. One is a unique and historically significant collection of artifacts. The other challenges romantic notions of dueling and poses the question—Is it defending one’s honor or sanctioned murder? Swords of the Americas, George E. Weatherly’s private collection of swords, sabers and related artifacts from the United States, Canada and various South American countries, is a fascinating glimpse into the past. Then, discover The Art of the Duel. Learn what separates a duel from regular fighting and ponder whether dueling was an effective process to address grievances or simply a socially-sanctioned form of murder. A highlight of the exhibit will be a description of one of America’s most famous duels between Alexander Hamilton, former Secretary of the Treasury, and sitting Vice President Aaron Burr on July 11, 1804. Both exhibitions are free with museum admission.

''IRAQ: remains''

May 21 through August 1, 2009 with two rotations. "Early Days" runs May 21 to June 27, 2009. "Reaping" runs June 30 to August 1, 2009. Wednesday - Friday 12-6 PM and Saturday 12-4 PM.

Kaviar Forge & Gallery
1718 Frankfort Ave.
Louisville, KY

Journalist Molly Bingham, a Louisville native, spent over a year reporting in Iraq from the beginning of the US invasion of 2003 through May 2004. On March 25, 2003 Bingham was arrested, detained, and interrogated at Abu Ghraib prison by Iraqi security officials while Saddam Hussein clung to power. After being released eight days later with four other westerners she returned to report on the events unfolding as the United States solidified the occupation in Iraq. Kaviar Forge & Gallery is honored to present a retrospective of remarkable photographs documenting the events of that period. Opening along with Louisville’s first annual Visual Arts Festival the rotating photography exhibition “IRAQ: remains” will be on display May 21 through August 1, 2009. Spending fourteen months in Iraq Bingham captured images of upheaval in its many layers. With the fall of a dictator to foreign occupation Iraqis have been subject to turbulent changes and an unknown future. The photographic commentary “IRAQ: remains” gives insight into the daily challenges faced by ordinary people. Continuing on with their everyday lives in catastrophically abnormal circumstances, Bingham reveals the reality of life in a war zone showing the stresses on both sides of the conflict. Fortunate to survive through daily bursts of gunfire and sporadic bombings US troops and the Iraqi people cope with the devastation that surrounds them. Bingham’s images capture destruction on a national, social, cultural, and personal scale. A single picture may raise a thousand questions. A photographic commentary will open eyes and promote understanding for a story not told in full.

''The Painted Veil''

June 11 - August 29, 2009
Wednesday through Friday 12-6 PM and Saturday 12-4 PM.

Kaviar Forge & Gallery
1718 Frankfort Ave.
Louisville, KY

On exhibition is “The Painted Veil” works by James Russell May. An eclectic group of paintings ranging from mythological themes to illustrated idioms, “The Painted Veil” has a combination of elements creating a captivating visual conundrum that gives both the sense of stillness and movement. May uses separate mediums to create dynamics between the figures, embellishments to the figure, and backgrounds. Primarily using oil paint for the subject of the piece, May meticulously transforms brushstrokes into smooth, soft, luminous figures that seem to actually glow. Every piece beckons then commands the viewer’s attention with bold uses of color and precise detailing. Join us for the Opening Reception of “The Painted Veil” from 6 until 9 PM on Friday June 26, 2009 in conjunction with the FAT Friday Trolley Hop and meet artist James Russell May.

The First Louisville Visual Arts Festival June 5th-July 31st 2009.

Louisville Visual Art Associaiont
3005 River Rd.
Louisville, KY

The Louisville Visual Arts Festival (LVAF) is a cooperative effort engaging the best visual arts, arts organizations, galleries, and arts stake holders in the region. LVAF is an annual sustainable Festival, with a different theme each year, geared to raising awareness and the stature of the Louisville's Visual Arts community regionally, nationally and internationally.

The inaugural celebration highlights the photographic art and creative community surrounding Louisville's own Center for Photographic Studies (1970-1978). Established by photographer C.J. Pressma, The Center was an independent creative photographic school based in Louisville in the 1970’s. The Center attracted students from 35 states and foreign countries during it's existence, many of whom remain working artists in the Louisville Metro area. The 2009 LVAF focuses on the art surrounding The Center's community, featuring over 25 local galleries and museums exhibiting photography throughout the months of June and July. The exhibits reflect work by former students of the Center for Photographic Studies, as well as memorabilia from the students themselves, works of renowned artists such as Ansel Adams and Minor White who visited and exhibited at the Center's two galleries.

The LVAF kick-off gala begins June 5-7th. Participating Galleries and Museums include Actors Theatre, Filson Historical Society, Galeries Hertz, Glassworks, Huff Gallery, 21c Museum Hotel, Mellwood Arts Center, Speed Art Museum, UofL Photographic Archives, Paul Paletti Gallery, Swanson Reed Gallery, Kentucky Museum of Arts and Crafts, Kaviar Forge Gallery, and more. Singin' In the Rain

July 10-12, 14-19, 7:30 pm. Matinees: July 12 & 18, 2 pm

The Kentucky Center, Bomhard Theater
501 W. Main Street
Louisville, KY

Its 1920s Hollywood and the film studios are in stiff competition to release the first “talkie.” Studio exec R.F. Simpson has no choice but to convert the new silent film of Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont to a “talkie” but there’s only one problem…Lina Lamont’s grating voice. In a pickle, Simpson cleverly dubs over Lina’s voice with newcomer Kathy Seldon; but on opening night, the crowd begs Lina to sing! With hilarious situations, snappy dialogue and an unbelievable score including “Singin’ In The Rain”, “Make ‘Em Laugh”, and “All I Do is Dream of You”, this production is the perfect light hearted celebration of the golden ages of musicals! Starring Pete Lay as Don Lockwood, Dustin Rayburn as Cosmo Brown, and Carman Napier as Kathy Selden, this production is directed by Jon Huffman. Music Theatre Louisville invites you to come early and stay late! Picnic fare will be offered prior to each production, featuring burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, ice cream, beer/wine, and mixed drinks!

In a career spanning nearly two decades, Dave Koz has established himself as a platinum-selling
artist, humanitarian, entrepreneur, radio host, and instrumental music advocate. A six-time
Grammy® nominee, he’ll be honored in 2009 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with a
star in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. Koz frequently collaborates with
fellow musician Brian Culbertson. Recently named the “2009 International Instrumentalist of the
Year” at the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards, Brian Culbertson (a keyboardist, trombonist, writer,
arranger, and producer) is considered by many to be the most exciting live performing
instrumentalist on the scene today. The proof is all over his milestone tenth project, Bringing Back
The Funk, a historic and completely unprecedented revisiting to the land of the uncut `70s-style
funk of ages.

Country Music: The Spirit of America features the biggest names in country music – including Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, Dwight Yoakam, Trisha Yearwood, Alison Krauss, Martina McBride, Jo Dee Messina, Alabama, Lee Ann Womack and many more. Together, they perform the genre’s classics of the past 100 years, including “Turn Turn Turn” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Throughout America’s storied history, country music has been a part of the nation’s social and cultural fabric, during the immigrant migration of the early 1900s, the Great Depression, World War II, the social upheaval of the 1960s, through 9/11 and today. Country Music traces American history and the parallel evolution of country music using rare historical footage and spectacular large-format cinematography. Sponsored locally by Texas Roadhouse.
