For Immediate Release:  December 29, 2017

(Louisville) – In recognition of his remarkable life and lasting impact on the world, Greater Louisville Inc., the Metro Chamber of Commerce, is proud to present the Thomas A. Edison Award posthumously to Muhammad Ali.

“The Greatest” is Louisville’s most famous son.  Known globally for his unmatchable skills inside the boxing ring, Ali left a lasting impact on the world around him with his boundless energy, warm personality, and tireless fight for peace, social justice, and compassion. Long after his boxing career ended he worked hard to improve not only the city of his birth, but also the world around him, guided by his six core principles: confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect, and spirituality.

His decision to found the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville created an international destination for his millions of admirers.  And perhaps most importantly, it is a tangible opportunity to teach lessons of perseverance, patience, grace, and humility to all those who pass through its doors. His motto to “be great, do great things” is one to which everyone can aspire and just one of many reasons Greater Louisville Inc. has chosen to honor him this year.

The Thomas A. Edison Award was created in 2001 to recognize an outstanding former Louisville resident who has successfully pursued their career while keeping this community close to their heart.  It is designed to celebrate these leaders and recognize the widespread impact this region has had on the world. Unlike some awards, the Thomas A. Edison Award is not automatically presented each year. Rather, it is awarded in recognition of extraordinary achievement and commitment to our community.

Past winners include Chef Edward Lee, Charles Brewer, Founder of Mindspring Enterprises, Joan Herbig, CEO, XcelleNet, Inc., Shelby Bonnie, Founder of CNET, Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chairman & CEO of GE, Joseph P. Clayton, Chairman, Sirius Satellite Radio, My Morning Jacket, Eleanor Griffin, Editor-in-Chief, Cottage Living Magazine, and Dean Fearing, Chef/Partner, Fearing’s Restaurant.

The Thomas A, Edison Award will be presented at GLI’s Annual Meeting the evening of January 25th, 2017 at the Louisville Palace Theatre.
