Louisville’s First Hack-a-Thon Nets Apps for Healthy Living, Crime Prevention and Help for the Disabled

Louisville Metro Government and Greater Louisville Inc. – the Metro Chamber of Commerce hosted seven teams of IT professionals in the nation’s capital for their first Code Red White & Blue Hack-a-Thon held this past Saturday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The goal was for city officials and business leaders to connect with tech designers, developers and entrepreneurs from the D.C. area toward filling the more than 1,000 jobs available in Louisville’s growing IT sector.

“We are so pleased that we were able to lay a strong foundation for the potential of hosting more of these types of events,” said GLI Executive Vice President, Community & Economic Development, Eileen Pickett. “In addition, we were able to attract some stellar talent and hear some terrific new technological ideas that could be implemented Louisville.”

Hack-a-Thons are an increasingly popular way to provide an opportunity for IT professionals to come together directly with communities and companies in search of their services. The event provides tech designers, developers and entrepreneurs with community challenges and gives them the coordinating available government data so that the teams can develop new and innovative technology-based solutions.

Greater Louisville Inc. is accepting nominations for Inc.credible Awards

Greater Louisville Inc. - the metro chamber of commerce is accepting nominations for the 2013 Inc.credible Awards now until May 10, 2013.

The Inc.credible Awards recognize outstanding small businesses for their innovation and success. Winners in eight categories will be announced at the 2013 Inc.credible Awards Luncheon, taking place on Friday, August 23 at the Galt House.

Nominations can be made by visiting www.greaterlouisville.com/inccrediblenom. Nominees must be businesses of less than 100 employees, locally-owned and operated in the Louisville region. They must have been in business prior to January 1, 2010 and not have received an Inc.credible Award in the last three years. Nominees do not have to be a GLI member and self-nominations are welcomed.

"Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, making up more than 99.7 percent of all employers and providing jobs to half of all private sector workers," said Craig J. Richard, president and CEO of Greater Louisville Inc. "Each year, we look forward to this opportunity to celebrate their achievements and their contributions to our region."

CompuCom Introduces Expanded Louisville Facility

Against a backdrop of hundreds of computers and the service personnel that make up its new Technical Operations Center, CompuCom Systems, Inc. introduced today its new Louisville facility and its plans to grow operations at 10100 Linn Station Road. Mayor Greg Fischer and officials from Greater Louisville Inc. - the Metro Chamber of Commerce - saluted the company and its management for the tremendous growth the company has experienced since coming to Louisville in 2004.

"CompuCom's expansion is the type of investment and job creation that I like to see in Louisville - highly-skilled, highly-technical and well-paid," Mayor Greg Fischer said. "The company is a great fit for our city."

In the last three years, CompuCom has seen its Technical Operations Center in Louisville grow from a 120-seat space in eastern Jefferson County to its new facility, which can accommodate up to 335 service personnel. CompuCom provides IT infrastructure services 24x7 to clients globally from Louisville. The company plans to add 100 new IT support associates in Louisville by the end of 2013 and an additional 100 positions throughout 2014.

Jefferson National Officially Opens New and Expanded Headquarters

Mayor Greg Fischer and officials from Greater Louisville Inc.- the Metro Chamber of Commerce today announced that Jefferson National, a recognized innovator of tax-advantaged investing solutions, has officially opened its new state-of-the-art headquarters. The opening is a major milestone in the company’s 5-year expansion plan that began when it relocated its corporate headquarters from New York to Louisville early last year.

“This is one more example of the Commonwealth’s great success in attracting dynamic business leaders to our area to contribute to the growth of more jobs and greater economic development,” said Governor Steve Beshear. “By expanding into this new facility, Jefferson National is already ahead of schedule in bringing a multi-million dollar investment and high-paying jobs to Kentucky, and we look forward to their continued success.”

Together with premier sponsors Norton Healthcare, Neustar Technologies and Humana, Inc., Louisville Metro Government and Greater Louisville Inc. – the Metro Chamber of Commerce, will host a Code Red White & Blue Hack-a-Thon in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, May 11 as part of an ongoing search for new talent in Louisville’s burgeoning IT sector, which consistently offers up to 1,000 available jobs.

Hack-a-Thons, which are increasingly gaining traction throughout the country, provide a unique day-long opportunity for IT professionals to come together directly with communities and companies in search of their services. The event provides tech designers, developers and entrepreneurs with community challenges and the coordinating available government data so that both teams (of up to five) and individuals can develop new and innovative technology-based solutions.

Ideas and executions are judged and participants are awarded for the most innovative apps or new software design and development. The Code Red White & Blue Hack-a-Thon will award 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place with cash and prizes totaling $10,000. Areas of focus can include health care, education, food, energy and the environment.
