HOW TO...

Promote Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) To Your Employees

What is it?

Prior Learning Assessment is the assessment and validation of work-based prior learning and competencies for the award of college credit.

How does it work?

Prior Learning Assessment can help your employees determine if they are eligible to receive credit for their work experience when returning to college, thus saving both you and your employees time and money. Post-secondary institutions may use a variety of ways to determine college credit:

  • Student Portfolios: Review examples of an applicant’s work or conduct one-on-one interviews
  • Employer training: Evaluate employer training programs and/or professional development
  • Challenge exams or customized exams: Colleges or their departments may offer exams to verify learning achievement
  • CLEP Exams (College Level Examination Program):
Tests college material and is offered by the College Board
  • DSST Exams (formerly known as the Dantes program): Tests knowledge of both lower-level and upper-level college material
  • ACE (American Council on Education) National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training: Recommends college credit equivalents for formal instructional programs offered by non-collegiate agencies, such as professional or trade associations.
  • ACE (American Council on Education) Military Guide: Published credit recommendations for formal military training

What can you do?

Be sure to advise your employees to ask about this option as they meet with their College Advocate, Degrees At Work Counselor, or college representatives. Refer to the Appendix for more information.

In October 2010, a new public-private partnership called 55,000 Degrees took on this mission with the support of local foundations to launch Louisville into the top tier of our competitor cities with the bold goal of adding 40,000 bachelor’s degrees and 15,000 associate’s degrees by 2020.

Texas Roadhouse

Texas Roadhouse uses Degrees At Work resources to help their employees complete their college degrees. Through their partnership with Degrees At Work, Texas Roadhouse was able to survey their employees to identify individuals that were interested in completing their college degree. Degrees At Work staff then worked with those interested employees through a college information workshop to help employees navigate the system of going back to college, and to help them identify programs and degrees that fit their needs. As a result, one Texas Roadhouse employee has now enrolled to pursue her degree in the fall. We thank Texas Roadhouse for all they do to support their employees education!
